It is being said that animal cruelty cases are on the rise. Since 2005, statewide animal cruelty complaints have climbed 15% while voluntary surrenders for neglect have soared 370%.
Chief Richard Le Blond of the MSPCA Law Enforcement Departments said that ‘When the economy is bad, when people are having a hard time, they’re more apt to take out their frustrations on an animal”.
With animal cruelty casers on the rise it just shows how many innocent animals are suffering. Because there are no harsh laws in place for animals cruelty their owners don’t care and take their frustrations an danger out on their pets because they don’t get in trouble for it like they would if it was a person they had done it to.
If there are harsher punishments in place then we wouldn’t have to worry about rises in animal cruelty cases because people would be too scared to hurt animals because of the consequences they would face.
But if would solve they problem, don’t you think they should give it a go?
Do you think if the laws were tougher on animal cruelty then the amount of cases would decrease?
What sort of laws do you think should be in place for animal cruelty and abuse?

Hi Ashleigh!
I have read that report on animal cruelty from O'Brian and I feel sorry about what's happening in the report.
First of all, I agree with what you have discussed in this article about the rise of animal cruelty and abandonment in Massachusetts and in other places around the world. Animal abuse is unnecessary in our societies and should be prevented in any possible way.
Secondly, you have supported your ideas and opinions through evidence of the State reps (Jennifer M and Callahan D Sutton), which they have stated that this particular issue should be included in the domestic violence protection orders. However, I also support this matter and that animal abuse should be taken as a serious matter. My belief is, God created all living things so they could be loved. For instance, the relationship between human and animals. Why do we have pets? Maybe because, we do care.
Finally to conclude, I totally agree that the legislative level of people in the government should take account that animal cruelty is a serious problem. Therefore, new laws should be created to ensure the safety of animals and the people who are inflicting the damage on these animals so that pet owners are not depressed.
Ok this article really made me sad, especially the bit about the puppy being tossed from a FOURTH FLOOR WINDOW! That is so disgusting! Im a huge animal lover and have 3 dogs and could never imagine doing that to my dogs!
Another bit that made me sad was the bit that states "when people are having a hard time, they're more apt to take out their frustrations on an animal". That is really horrible that people can do that. We really need to get that animal cruelty numbers to drop back down that 15%, if not MORE!
Yeah it is really sad but so true that people take their frustrations out on the innocent animals around them...
They think they cant hurt their families or friends so their pets are the next best option, but what people forget is that their animals are part of their family and they try to help in the ways they can.
I got my cat when I was 10 years old and when I go home so still comes and gives me big cuddles to show her affection, things like this are so kewl but others take for granted these things and abuse their animals instead...
Like they say "dogs are a mans best friend" but way to many dogs are being abused and treated cruely by their owners...
Thats so true about the mans best friend bit. Animals have unconditional love for their owners and it makes me sad because the animals wouldnt know any better, and think that's how their suppose to be treated.
